Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.
A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
The couple face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
